I’ve completed my insurance application and my Paramedical has been ordered….now what?

What to expect during your Paramedical

  • No disrobing is necessary
  • The nurse will be alone with you in all cases.
  • The nurse will ask questions similar to the questions you have already answered on your application form.
  • The nurse will take your blood pressure, height, weight and urine sample.
  • A paramedical usually takes 25-35 minutes depending on your health history.

Blood Profile 

  • The nurse will have you sign a permission slip.
  • The nurse will take 2 vials of blood and a urine sample.
  • The procedure will take a maximum of 15 minutes.

Some of the tests in the blood profile may include: 

  • HIV virus
  • Sugar
  • Kidney profile
  • Liver profile
  • Cholesterols and blood lipids

There are approximately 16 tests done on the blood. 

The urine which is sent with the blood is tested for nicotine, medications, drugs as well as a micro urinalysis.

Urine HIV 

  • A permission slip is filled out by the nurse before the urine sample is taken.
  • The procedure takes approxi-mately 10 minutes.

Some of the tests done on a urine sample may include: 

  • HIV virus
  • Cocaine and the presence of other drugs
  • Nicotine
  • Medications
  • Micro urinalysis

Saliva Test 

  • A permission slip is filled out by the nurse before the saliva sample is taken.
  • The procedure takes approxi-mately 10 minutes.

Some of the tests done on a saliva sample may include: 

  • HIV virus
  • Cocaine
  • Nicotine

Electrocardiogram (or ECG) 

This can be performed at your home or office however, a couch or bed must be available to complete the test.

  • An ECG will take approximately 20 minutes.

A Paramedical, blood profile and ECG will take approximately 1 hour
